Three attributes, published by the agency on a public business listing. They are the agency’s words about itself, not my description of it. On the listing they sit invisibly inside an attributes list. On a page they belong at the top.

Also the agency’s own. In Yonkers that is not a footnote. It is often the reason somebody walks through a particular door.

Listed too, and for anybody planning a trip, knowing it in advance matters.

That is the whole of it. Three attributes and a phone number is what somebody has to decide on.

What they book is not written down anywhere.

Nothing else about this agency is published. Not what they book, not where they specialise, not whether they do flights, packages, cruises, visas or remittances, and not one price.

Where do they specialise? Almost every neighbourhood agency has two or three destinations it knows cold, and none of them are named anywhere I can find. That is the biggest gap on this page by a distance, and it is the first thing I would want corrected.

Six days, and open until seven.

Half past nine until seven on weekdays, late enough that somebody can come in after work, which is when people actually plan travel. Saturday runs ten until five. Sunday is closed.

Search the agency’s name, and the agency is fourth.

The first thing on the page is not the agency. It is a row of tours, priced, bookable, with instant confirmation, sold by an outside booking company that has never met anybody in Yonkers. I counted the order on the listing page. It goes:

That is not a mistake anybody made. It is how a listing page pays for itself. For most businesses that is merely annoying. For a travel agency it is direct competition, on its own name, in its own town.

There is nothing to be done about that page. There is something to be done about having one of your own.

The tour prices, the booking company’s name and the name of the listing site are all deliberately missing above. They are not the agency’s prices, and reproducing them here would be exactly the mistake I am complaining about. The agency may well not know any of this is happening.
